DAVID MILLER AM Piano

The pianist David Miller is widely recognized as one of Australia's leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists. The Sydney Morning Herald has described him as "the role model of Australian accompanists" and in the Queen's Birthday 1995 Honours List he was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia for his service to music. With soprano Wendy Dixon and violinist Marina Marsden he was a founding member of the innovative and highly-acclaimed Grevillea Ensemble in 1999.
His distinguished career has included partnerships with many internationally renowned singers and instrumentalists, including Joan Carden, Boris Belkin, Raphael Wallfisch, Marilyn Richardson, Lauris Elms, John Mark Ainsley, Luigi Alva, John Pringle, Elizabeth Campbell, Jane Edwards, Takako Nishisaki, Leonard Sharrow, Meir Rimon, Alain Marion, Igor Osim, Mark Walton, Georg Pedersen, Daniel Stolper, Konradin Groth and Tom Edmonds.


Mr Miller has performed with many of Australia's foremost chamber ensembles, including the Australia Ensemble, the Canberra Wind Soloists and Ku-ring-gai Virtuosi He was the pianist for the Huntington Piano Trio and worked for a period with the legendary contemporary music ensemble Flederman.


His performing schedule has taken him to the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, New Caledonia, Korea, Vanuatu and Vietnam, as well as through most parts of Australia.
He works regularly for the ABC and Musica Viva Australia and records for ArtWorks, Tall Poppies, Vox Australis and ABC Classics. He has recently completed an extensive recording and editing contract with ABC Classics, performing the songs of the Australian composer Horace Keats with soprano Wendy Dixon and baritone John Pringle. He has released an ArtWorks CD of Boer War songs with baritone Michael Halliwell, vocal tutor at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Also for ArtWorks, Mr Miller has been involved in a research project with Susan Collins on the violin and piano music of Raymond Hansen which has also been issued on CD.


David Miller has been on the staff of Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 1980 and in 1995 was appointed the first chair of the Ensemble Studies Unit, with responsibility for Chamber Music/Accompaniment tuition and administration throughout the institution. He has introduced an innovative and comprehensive programme of study for students at both graduate and under-graduate levels and actively promotes a wide variety of performance opportunities for student ensembles.
He has conducted master classes and lectures for universities, conservatoriums, music organizations and music conferences in many parts of Australia and Asia.


He has also been a regular guest artist on the staff of the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, twice on the panel of the Mietta's Song Recital Award and coordinator of the Keyboard and Chamber Music program at National Music Camp January 2003.
