Grevillea 2025 Recital Series - Programme 1
For our first programme in this year’s season, we’re delighted to welcome again one of our favourite associates; the flautist James Kortum, in an attractive program of songs, flute solos and trios from France and the United States of America.

James Kortum

The major work in the program, The Deepest Desire, is a setting of Four Meditations on Love, written by Sister Helen Prejean CSJ, activist and author of the best-selling book Dead Man Walking - made into a film in 1995 with Susan Sarandon in the lead role. The work has been set to music by the renowned American composer Jake Heggie and was premiered in 2002.
James and David will then perform four character pieces by the French composer Albert Roussel. Each piece has an evocative title and is dedicated to a contemporary flautist. The writing is superbly idiomatic. Click here for a taste
Following that, Wendy and David will present Four Distant Songs - a beautiful group of poems written by André Lebey and set superbly by Georges Hüe.
To complete the program, we’ll introduce you to some of the hidden treasures we’ve uncovered in preparing this program. A bouquet of gallic charm from a variety of composers, known and unknown.
Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the recital, and proceeds will be donated to the Richard Gill Primary School in Muswellbrook (a comprehensive, secular, independent primary school, with a music focus).
